Wim Wenders ha affermato che ogni foto è un tentativo di scoprire qualcosa di una persona o di un luogo, di stabilire in qualche modo la verità di un contesto.
Ecco dunque l’ambizione di questo lavoro dedicato ad Avellino, la città in cui sono nato e vivo. Gli scatti che immortalano il cuore della città ma anche la sua periferia, come ogni atto creativo, parafrasando Wenders, inevitabilmente hanno a che fare con l’enorme tema della ricerca d’identità.
Secondo il grande fotografo e cineasta tedesco il concetto d’identità nei tempi passati non esisteva, è una questione che nasce nel ventesimo secolo così come le sue dirette conseguenze: dissociazione e solitudine.
Non se ne avvertiva il bisogno perchè “le persone si identificavano con se stesse o con il proprio ambiente. Appartenevano a un luogo, e l’identità non poteva essere messa in discussione: c’era.”
Ma cosa accade se smarrito in larga parte il passato e afflitto da un presente sciagurato è il luogo stesso a non possedere più un’ identità?

Wim Wenders stated that each photo is an attempt of discovering something about a person or a place, of establishing, somehow, the truth of a context.
Here, then, the ambition of this job dedicated to Avellino, the town I was born and live in. The shots immortalizing the heart of the town yet her suburb as well, as every creative act – to misquote Wenders – have to do, inevitably, with the huge theme of the search for identity.
According to the great German photographer and filmmaker, the concept of identity did not exist in past times, it is in fact a question that is born in the twentieth century just like its direct consequences: dissociation and solitude.
It was not something necessary as “people would identify with themselves or with their own environment. They belonged to a place, and the identity could not be questioned: it was there”. Yet, what happens if, once the past is largely lost and, afflicted by wretched present, it is the place itself which
does not own an identity anymore ?.
